Elgin, IL—The City of Elgin is excited to welcome Buffy, the newest addition to the Lords Park Zoo! Buffy, weighing in about 600 pounds and just over a year old, arrived at Lords Park Zoo on Monday, June 3. She brings fresh energy and companionship to our lone bison, Takota. After losing beloved bison Drew and Becky last year, the city began exploring the possibility of welcoming another bison. A generous donation from Diamond Tail Ranch near Fort Collins, Colorado, has now made it possible to welcome a young orphan bison named Buffy. The veterinarian responsible for the medical care of the Lords Park Zoo animals, along with experts from Brookfield Zoo and Fermilab, were consulted during this process. All parties concluded that Lords Park Zoo is a suitable home for her. As the zoo prepares to reach full capacity, the city is also considering adding another bison later in the year and plans to add up to four white-tailed deer, bringing the zoo to full capacity with native animals. The public is invited to join in welcoming Buffy! Lords Park Zoo officially opened on June 1, and all are welcome to visit and meet our newest addition. For more information, visit elginil.gov/zoo.
