First United Methodist Church – Elgin Celebrates 100th Building Anniversary with Special Community Events
Elgin, IL – November 16-17, 2024 – First United Methodist Church of Elgin invites the entire community to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its historic building. With over 185 years of service to the Elgin area, the church is hosting a weekend of events to honor its legacy and the community it serves.
On Saturday, November 16, the church will hold a Community Mass Renewal of Wedding Vows at 1:00 PM. All married couples are welcome to participate, no matter where or how they were married. A special invitation is extended to couples who were married at First UMC. To ensure a meaningful experience, the event is limited to 100 couples, and each couple may invite up to four (4) guests, including children. Every couple will receive a commemorative certificate, and a light reception will follow the ceremony.
An open children’s play area will be available for families attending during the reception. While no formal childcare will be provided, parents are welcome to supervise their children as they play in a designated area.
“We’re excited to offer this event as part of our anniversary celebrations,” said Rev. Dr. Felicia LaBoy, Lead Pastor of First UMC. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for couples to reflect on their love and commitment while also connecting with the broader community.”
The weekend festivities continue on Sunday, November 17, with a 100th Anniversary Worship Service at 10:00 AM. Guest preacher Rev. Fabiola Grandon-Mayer will deliver a special sermon, inspired by the first message preached in the building 100 years ago. The service will include Holy Communion and a rededication of the church building and congregation. A light luncheon will follow.
First UMC has been a vital part of Elgin for over 185 years, providing essential services and support to the community through programs like the Weekly Soup Kettle, the Elgin Community Winter Warming Shelter in partnership with The One Collective; and partnerships with local organizations such as Elgin Housing Authority’s YouthBuild Program, Northern Illinois Food Bank, Elgin Masons, Grupos Dos Pasos AA/NA, and the Ruth Project.
