Elgin has been named one of the best places to live in the United States by U.S. News & World Report, ranking No. 5 among cities in Illinois and earning the No. 122 spot nationally on the publication’s 2025-2026 list of the “250 Best Places to Live in the U.S.”
“I’m proud that Elgin has been named one of the '250 Best Places to Live in the U.S. for 2025–2026' by U.S. News & World Report. This recognition reflects the strength, diversity and resilience of our community,” said Elgin Mayor David Kaptain. “Elgin’s rich history, cultural diversity and commitment to sustainable growth have created a community where people are proud to live, work and raise families. From our downtown and scenic Fox River trails to our strong schools and thriving arts scene, Elgin offers a quality of life that is both unique and enriching. I want to thank our residents, businesses and partners who help make Elgin a great place to live and work — especially for those striving to achieve the American dream.”
The annual report evaluates cities across the country based on affordability, quality of life, job market strength and overall desirability. Elgin’s consistent focus on public safety, community development and economic opportunity helped set it apart on this year’s list.
“This recognition reflects our focused strategic planning and collaboration across city departments, community partners and residents,” said City Manager, Rick Kozal. “From public safety and infrastructure to economic development and sustainability, our city staff is committed to delivering high-quality services that support a thriving, inclusive Elgin. We’ll continue doing the work that helps residents, businesses and neighborhoods succeed.”
In 2024, Elgin was named the “safest and most affordable city in America” by GoBankingRates.com.
