Elgin continues to grow its community electric vehicle charging network, with new installations planned for high-traffic public destinations by the end of 2025.

Since completing the EV Readiness Program in 2024 through the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, the city has installed four public chargers with eight ports at the Robert Gilliam Municipal Complex and the Centre of Elgin parking deck. Those chargers have logged nearly 2,000 connections this year.

Construction will soon begin on four additional chargers—adding eight more ports—at Bowes Creek Country Club and The Highlands of Elgin golf course. These locations were selected due to their popularity, high visitor traffic, and longer average stays, making them ideal for Level 2 chargers, which provide 20 to 30 miles of range per hour. By the end of 2025, Elgin’s public network will total 16 charging ports.

"These new EV chargers at the Highlands of Elgin and Bowes Creek Country Club are an important step in Elgin’s vision for a sustainable, forward-looking city," said Aaron Neal, director of public works. "By providing reliable charging at popular destinations, we’re making it easier for residents and visitors to consider electric vehicles. At the same time, we’re continuing to electrify the city’s fleet, reflecting our commitment to reducing emissions and building a cleaner, more sustainable community for everyone."

The city’s fleet includes five electric vehicles already in service, supported by dedicated chargers at Fire Station 1, the Robert Gilliam Municipal Complex and the Public Works facility. These EVs are used by code compliance, street and traffic divisions, and the fire department.

The city plans to expand its EV charging network further in 2026, with additional sites under review.
