Elgin Announces New Survey and Second Public Meeting for Accessible Streets and Sidewalks Plan

ELGIN, IL — The city of Elgin will hold its second public meeting on the Accessible Streets and Sidewalks plan on Thursday, Dec. 11, as staff continue gathering community input on priority projects intended to improve accessibility throughout the city.

The drop-in meeting is scheduled from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way. Attendees will be able to review proposed projects, share feedback on priority routes and offer recommendations that will help shape the plan’s next steps.

More than 150 survey responses received this summer informed the current list of candidate projects. Staff also conducted a technical review of sidewalk conditions and reviewed proximity to major destinations and high-traffic routes.

A new survey is now available, inviting residents to rank the proposed projects. The survey incorporates input gathered during the first round of public outreach as well as findings from the ongoing technical review. Results will help guide staff in preparing recommendations for future accessibility improvements.

The survey is open through Christmas and can be accessed at https://www.surveyhero.com/c/Elgin-ADA-projects. It's also available, along with additional project information on the city’s Engage Elgin site.

Elgin’s Accessible Streets and Sidewalks Plan launched in early 2025 to support long-term improvements that make public rights-of-way safer and more accessible. The project is funded by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning and will help the city meet federal requirements under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
