City Seeks Input on Streets and Sidewalk Accessibility

The public is invited to share input on ways to improve street and sidewalk accessibility as part of the city of Elgin’s Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan.
The online survey, open through Oct. 1, asks participants to share their experiences and ideas for improving accessibility on streets and sidewalks. In addition, an interactive map allows users to identify specific barriers and recommend locations for ADA upgrades. Suggestions can continue to be added to the map after the survey deadline. Both the survey and map are available at engage.elginil.gov/ada-transition-plan.
In addition to the online survey, the public may attend one of three community input sessions in September:
- Gail Borden Library, Rakow Branch, 2751 W. Bowes Road — Sept. 9, 5:30 to 7 p.m.
- Centre of Elgin Ballroom, 100 Symphony Way — Sept. 11, 5:30 to 7 p.m.
- Elgin Downtown Market, Riverside Drive — Sept. 12, 3 to 7 p.m.
The ADA Transition Plan is a federal requirement designed to ensure public infrastructure meets the needs of people with disabilities. Community input will help the city prioritize projects that remove accessibility barriers, improve mobility and create a more inclusive environment.
In fall 2025, results from the field evaluation and public input will be used to identify routes for accessibility upgrades. A second round of public input meetings and a survey is planned for winter 2025-26 to gather feedback on priority projects.
