ELGIN - Earlier today, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson was honored at Elgin High School with an induction into the school's Alumni Hall of Fame. Johnson is a member of Elgin High School’s Class of 1994.

"Today is a proud and meaningful moment for Elgin High School," said EHS Principal Avelira Rodríguez González. "Leading a school in today’s climate requires us to constantly remind our students that their voices matter, their potential is limitless, and their roots can carry them to extraordinary places. That is why inducting one of Elgin High School's own, Mayor Johnson, into the Elgin High School Hall of Fame is so powerful.”

The ceremony was attended by nearly 100 of Johnson’s friends, family members, classmates, former teachers, and community leaders.

“I can’t express how deeply humbled I am,” Johnson said after his Hall of Fame plaque was unveiled. “It means a lot to me to be recognized by school leaders and community members who helped shape me into the person I am today.”

“Being a part of band and school clubs and sports, it taught me a lot about myself, and I owe a lot of what I’ve experienced in life to Elgin High School,” said Johnson, who took a tour of the school after the ceremony. “The education I received here not only molded me into a well-rounded person, but amazing teachers inspired me to become an educator myself. ”

According to Rodríguez González, for Elgin High School students, the moment represents more than a recognition—it was inspiration.

“Mayor Johnson once walked these same halls, sat in these classrooms, and shared the same dreams that so many of our students carry today,” she said. “His journey from student to public servant and leader of one of the nation’s great cities is a testament to perseverance, purpose, and the power of public education. It shows that the path from Elgin High School can lead anywhere, even to the highest levels of leadership.”
