Department Overview:

  • The South Elgin Police Department consists of 35 sworn officers: Police Chief, two (2) Deputy Chiefs, and six (6) Sergeants. 
  • Officers in patrol work 12-hour shifts.
  • The Department offers a variety of specialty positions, specifically: Investigations, Firearms Instructor, Field Training Officer, Evidence Technician, School Resource Officer, and Drone Operator.  South Elgin is a member of Kane County Major Crimes Task Force, Kane County SWAT, Hostage Negotiators, and Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team.
  • Specialty position hours vary.


What are the Job Requirements:

  • Currently serving/active on a police department for at least two years.
  • Certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
  • Be a municipal police officer, county sheriff’s deputy, or Illinois Sate Trooper in good standing.
  • Meet the age requirements set forth in the Illinois State Statute 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-6. 
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens and/or alien admitted for permanent residence or lawfully admitted for temporary residence and who produces evidence of intention to become a citizen of the United States.
  • High school diploma or Equivalent (GED)
  • Possess a valid Illinois driver’s license
  • Must be able to meet vision standard at time of appointment. Have at least 20/70 binocular vision without glasses (correctable to 20/20 with glasses/contacts), and shall not be color blind.
  • Must be of excellent moral character and personal integrity.
  • Possess no record of felony conviction or crime of moral turpitude.
  • Must be able to read/write/speak English fluently.


Salary: 
$76,745-$112,279, which is determined by years of experience (up to 4-year in salary table; salaries based on 42-hour average work week), plus a full benefit package.

Hiring Process: 
Initial Application Process of Candidates:

  1. Complete the South Elgin Police Department application and submit all required documents. Applications with missing documentation will not be considered.
  2. Oral interview. Lateral entry applicants who have met all hiring pre-requisites will be subject to an oral interview held by BFPC or the designee. The passing score of the oral interview will be 70%. Lateral hire applicants with a score below 70% will be eliminated from the testing process.

Initial Examination of Candidates:

  1. Background investigation
  2. Ride-Along

Candidates receiving a conditional offer of employment shall be required to pass the following:

  1. Psychological exam
  2. Pre-employment Physical Examination
