Women's Leadership Circle Introduces Leading with Compassion: A Conversation with Crystal Michels, BSN, RN, OCN
Each month, our Women’s Leadership Circle will shine a spotlight on an inspiring woman who is making an impact in her field, her organization, and her community. Through this blog series, we’ll share her story—her journey, challenges, successes, and the lessons she’s learned along the way. Our goal is to celebrate the diverse experiences of women leaders while creating a space for connection, inspiration, and growth. We hope these profiles not only recognize remarkable women but also empower others to lead with confidence, authenticity, and purpose.

Behind every exceptional healthcare experience is a leader who not only understands patient care but also champions the people delivering it. is one of those leaders—bringing both clinical expertise and heartfelt compassion to her work every day. Here's an interview with Crystal.
About the Business
"I manage the cancer center and our High Risk Cancer Prevention Clinic at Advocate Sherman Hsopital, where I have the privilege of working alongside a highly skilled and compassionate team dedicated to caring for our oncology population. In my role, I oversee team development, operational growth, and strategic initiatives that support accessibility and excellence in cancer care. I also lead community outreach efforts focused on cancer screening, prevention, and early detection helping to educate and empower our community."
A Challenge You’ve Overcome
"After more than a decade in nursing, transitioning from direct patient care into leadership was both exciting and intimidating. Leading teams from “behind the scenes” required an entirely new skill set and mindset. Over time, I learned to embrace this change, and it has been incredibly rewarding to help cultivate a healthy, inclusive culture where our teams feel supported and valued."
A Success You’re Proud Of
"As a single mom, returning to school to earn my BSN while working full time was one of the most challenging and proudest experiences of my life. It allowed me to show my children firsthand that dreams are always within reach, no matter the circumstances. My hope is that they carry that belief forward and inspire others as they pursue their own goals."
Best Advice You’ve Ever Received
"I have two favorites:
“Listen more than you speak.”
You gain so much knowledge, understanding, and connection when you truly listen.
“Be kind always.”
Everyone is carrying something you may not see."
Your Favorite Way to Spend Free Time
"Spending time with the people I love most, sharing a great meal or being out in nature. And ideally, all with the electronics put away so we can be fully present."
