The position of mayor and four councilmember seats on the Elgin City Council, all carrying a four-year term, will be open in the 2027 Elgin municipal election.
Petitions for candidacy for the 2027 election are available in the City Clerk’s Office, located in Room 202 of Elgin City Hall, 150 Dexter Court.
Necessary qualifications to hold the office of mayor or council member include: - Being a qualified elector and registered voter.
- Being a resident of the City of Elgin for at least one year before the election.
- Not being in arrears in the payment of taxes or other indebtedness due to the City of Elgin.
- Not having been convicted in any U.S. court of an infamous crime, bribery, perjury or another felony, unless eligibility has been restored as provided by law.
Petitions for nomination must be filed with the City Clerk’s Office no earlier than 8 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19, 2026, and no later than 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, 2026. The placement of names on the ballot will be determined by the order of filing.
A consolidated primary election will be required only if more than 16 candidates file for the four council member seats or more than four candidates file for mayor. If a consolidated primary election is necessary, it will be held Feb. 23, 2027.
The consolidated general election will be held April 6, 2027.
