The City of Elgin, in partnership with LRS, will host an electronic waste recycling, bulk item disposal and secure document shredding event from 8-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at the City of Elgin Public Works facility, 1900 Holmes Road.
The event is open to Elgin residents and provides a convenient, local way to recycle unwanted electronics, dispose of large household items and securely destroy sensitive personal documents. Residents must present a valid Illinois driver’s license or state ID showing an Elgin address.
Fees are assessed per vehicle as follows: - Electronic waste, bulk items or both: $20 per vehicle.
- Large wood or metal television consoles: $40 each. If a console is brought with electronic waste or bulk items, the $40 console fee will be added to the $20 per-vehicle fee.
- Document shredding: Free for up to three standard banker boxes of paper documents. Secure document shredding will be completed on site.
All fees must be paid by credit card. Cash will not be accepted.
Residents are encouraged to review the list of acceptable materials before arriving at the facility. - Electronic waste accepted: Cable receivers, cell phones, computers (desktop, laptop, netbook, notebook, tablet), computer cables, digital converter boxes, DVD players, DVD recorders, computer keyboard, computer mouse, fax machines, portable digital assistant, portable digital music players, printers, satellite receivers, scanners, small scale servers, TVs and computer monitors, VCR recorders, video game consoles and zip drives
- Bulk items accepted: Standard household furniture, including tables, chairs, mattresses sealed in plastic mattress covers, box springs, bookcases and sofas
Vehicles up to the size of a 15-foot box truck or moving truck filled with household bulk items are permitted entry.
To ensure safety and environmental compliance, several items cannot be accepted at this event. Prohibited materials include paint, oil, household hazardous waste, chemicals, fire extinguishers, propane or helium tanks, tires, and loose, bagged or containerized trash, recyclables or yard waste.
Major appliances, including refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers, convection ovens, air conditioning units and humidifiers, are not accepted. Items containing liquids of any kind or excessively heavy, long or wide items, such as pianos or gun safes, are also prohibited.
For residents with LRS curbside or commercial services, special arrangements to pick up excessively heavy items can be made by contacting LRS directly at 855-612-7938.
