Grassroots Community Action

With nearly 2.5 million members and some 14,000 community posts, The American Legion is truly a grassroots organization. Our local posts are centers of community life, guiding national policy through resolutions that address veterans' health care, national security, and the economy—all springing from the needs of the local community.

A Legacy of Community Investment

The American Legion's history is one of powerful civic action. We were instrumental in creating the modern VA and the GI Bill, profoundly shaping veteran and family life. From building national memorials like the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to leading military-to-civilian transition assistance, we support the family unit and the wider community that welcomes them home.

Fellowship and Family Fun

Service is a community affair. Our family of organizations—the American Legion Auxiliary (the world's largest women's patriotic service organization) and the Sons of The American Legion (S.A.L.)—work together on local outreach, community education, and fundraising. Whether it’s through a simple volunteer activity, a community dinner, or participating in our charitable Legion Riders group, we make serving our nation and community an enjoyable, fulfilling experience.
