The South Elgin Public Works Department is a dynamic organization serving a community of roughly 24,000 residents in the far western suburbs of Chicago. We are recruiting for an employee in the Streets & Forestry Division that works with the Village’s streets, parkways, rights of ways, trees, streetlights, and storm sewer systems. We are hiring for an entry level position of Maintenance Worker I. This position works directly with other Public Works employees to perform a variety of routine skilled and semi-skilled labor tasks in the construction, maintenance, operation, repair, and replacement of public infrastructure, along with playing an integral role in snow removal activities throughout the Village. Qualifications include possession of a high school diploma or G.E.D. A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a road construction or municipal maintenance field is strongly preferred; or a combination of education and experience which demonstrates ability to perform the work. For a candidate to be successful in this position they must have the ability to safely operate various types of heavy-duty tools and equipment including backhoe, loader, skid steer, bucket truck, and snowplow truck. They should also possess knowledge of facilities, materials, construction methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and repair activities. This position requires an understanding of basic electrical theory and the ability to diagnose and repair street light outages and underground cable faults. Current possession of a valid State of Illinois Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) is required. 

Normal work hours for this position are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Response to after-hours call-backs seven days a week, including evenings, weekends, and holidays and preparation for emergency conditions as necessary (e.g., snow removal, storm damage, etc.) is required. Work includes primarily outdoor work in various types of weather conditions. 

The selected finalist will be required to successfully pass a pre-employment criminal background check, reference check, and post-offer medical physical with drug screen.

The Village of South Elgin offers an excellent work environment, as well as a comprehensive benefits package with a starting salary of $28.11 per hour. The salary range for this position is $28.11 – $35.24 per hour. This position is represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 150.
