A Day in Asia: Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Month 

Learn about the culture, music, dance and food of Asia and the Pacific Islands from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 6 at the Main Library parking lot, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.

Entertainment will feature performances by the Filipino Choir from Elgin’s St. Thomas More Church, Thai triplets from Wat Dhammaram, two Lao groups from Elgin’s Multicultural Education Group, an NIU music group led by JC Wang, professor of Asian Studies, and Giingo, a horse-headed fiddle ensemble from the Chicago Area Mongolian Association.

Elgin Mayor David Kaptain will give a proclamation for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month about 2 p.m. A Color Guard with Laotian veterans dressed in military uniform will be in front of the Lao Memorial next to the library.

A variety of foods will be available for sampling and purchase from Stix & Noodles food truck; samples of noodles and vegetables and coconut sticky rice from Doungchay’s Kitchen/Roll-N-Donut; samples of a Korean chicken dish and dessert from Hanul Family Alliance; and fried rice samples offered by Marcos from Open Door Health Center of Illinois.

Representatives from Open Door, Xilin Asian Community Center, MEG (Multicultural Education Group), Chinese Mutual Aid, an author’s table, Lao artists, India/Pakistan table, Senior Blessing Table, and Gail Borden Library will be available to talk about their organizations.
