Celebrating Women in Business: The Power of Women-Owned Small Businesses

October is Women’s Small Business Month, a time to recognize the women entrepreneurs and business owners who turn ideas into enterprises, create jobs, serve their communities and strengthen the economy.
At the Elgin Area Chamber, we see that impact every day. Women are starting and growing businesses, leading organizations, creating opportunities and helping shape the future of the Elgin area. This month provides an important opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments and to recognize why supporting women-owned businesses benefits our entire community.
Women-Owned Businesses Are an Economic Force
Women-owned businesses represent a significant part of the American economy. The most recent U.S. Census Bureau data cited in 2026 analyses indicates that women own approximately 14.2 million businesses nationwide, generating about $2.8 trillion in receipts. Women also own approximately 1.4 million employer firms, representing nearly 23% of U.S. businesses with paid employees. Women-Owned Business Statistics (2026) [womynowned.com]
Those numbers demonstrate something important: supporting women entrepreneurs isn't simply about recognizing individual achievement. It is about strengthening a major part of our economy.
Behind every statistic is a business owner taking risks, solving problems, serving customers and contributing to the economic vitality of her community.
The Impact Is Local
Here in the Elgin area, small businesses help give our community its identity. They create places to work, shop, dine and connect. They build relationships with customers and other businesses, invest locally and contribute to the vibrancy that makes our region a great place to live and do business.
Women entrepreneurs are an important part of that story.
That's why the Elgin Area Chamber works to create opportunities for business owners and professionals to connect, learn, build relationships and grow throughout the year.
One example is our Women’s Leadership Circle, a collaborative network designed to help women build relationships and advance their personal and professional development. Chamber programming has brought women together around topics such as negotiation, leadership, career development and meaningful professional connections.
And that effort continues. A Women in Leadership event is scheduled for November 5 at SUR Barrels & Boards – a woman owned business right here in Elgin. Get registered today!
Celebrate by Supporting Women-Owned Businesses
Women’s Small Business Month is also a reminder that each of us can play a role in supporting women entrepreneurs.
This October, consider:
• Shopping or dining at a woman-owned business.
• Referring a woman entrepreneur to someone in your network.
• Sharing a local business on social media.
• Inviting a woman business owner to attend a Chamber event with you.
• Making an introduction that could lead to a new customer, supplier, or partnership.
• Taking a moment to recognize a woman whose leadership is making a difference.
Small actions can create meaningful connections, and meaningful connections help businesses grow.
Celebrating Today, Building for Tomorrow
At the Elgin Area Chamber, celebrating women in business isn't limited to one month. It's part of our larger commitment to creating a connected, informed and thriving business community.
During Women’s Small Business Month, we are especially proud to recognize the women who have taken the leap into entrepreneurship, those growing established businesses, and the leaders using their experience and influence to open doors for others.
To the women building businesses and helping build a stronger Elgin area: we celebrate you, we appreciate you, and we look forward to growing alongside you.
