Elgin Bids Bon Voyage to Alft: Dozens of Elgin dignitaries and longtime residents gathered at American Legion Post 57 in early April to wish former Elgin mayor, Gail Borden Library trustee, Elgin High School teacher and longtime Elgin historian, E.C. “Mike” Alft, good luck as he and his wife, Fran, relocate to Pennsylvania to be closer to their children. An Elgin resident since 1950, Alft, 90, authored over a dozen books on the history of Elgin. [Photo courtesy James Harvey Photography]
