Grand Victoria Summer Concert Series: The GVC Summer Concert Series in Festival Park kicks off July 3 at 7:00 p.m. with Rick Springfield, The Romantics and Loverboy. The next day, GVC presents a free 4th of July concert in Festival Park at 5:30 p.m. with Mark Farner, followed by a post-concert fireworks display. Then on July 31 at 7:00 p.m., Lynyrd Skynyrd returns to "Sweet Home Elgin". Tickets are available at www.GrandVictoriaCasino.com.

New Housing Development Named After Gilliam: Roughly 150 people attended a ribbon cutting ceremony in June celebrating construction of a new affordable housing building named after late councilman Robert Gilliam at 130 S. State Street. The building, which features 150 affordable housing units and 14 market rate units, is part of a $33 million project by the Housing Authority of Elgin that included renovating the adjacent 11-story building at 120 S. State Street.

Elgin Documentary Honored: The Elgin Area Historical Society, Grindstone Productions and Ernie Broadnax were recently selected as the 2016 Award of Merit winners by the Leadership in History awards committee for the documentary film, Project 2-3-1. The competition is the nation's most prestigious for recognition of achievement in state and local history.

Project Backpack: Project Backpack is a community-based initiative led by Elgin Community College to benefit area students in need of school supplies. Approximately 15,000 students have been helped since 2010. Supplies will be distributed on August 13 at ECC’s Spartan Events Center to students who provide proof of residency or school enrollment within ECC District 509. Donations of school supplies can be dropped off at the Chamber office, 31 S. Grove Ave. Visit project-backpack.org for more details.

Dr. Sam Recognized by Elgin Cosmo Club: Congratulations to Elgin Community College President and Elgin Area Chamber Board Chair Dr. David Sam who was recently recognized with the Elgin Cosmopolitan Club's Distinguished Service Award at a ceremony in June. Elgin Cosmopolitan Club is a local service organization that works to fight diabetes thru various fundraising efforts.
