Historic Elgin website honored: The Elgin Heritage Commission was honored with a “Best Practices” award for their Historic Elgin website at the 2016 National Alliance of Preservation Commissions conference in Mobile, AL. The awards committee was very impressed by the Commission’s effort to digitize and make accessible to the public the information about Elgin’s historic properties that have been assembled over the years as part of the organization’s plaque program.

Robot Zoo comes to Gail Borden: Beginning October 7, Gail Borden Public Library visitors can view giant robot animals to explore how real animals work at The Robot Zoo, a popular national exhibit touring science and natural history museums. Mary Lou Retton headlines Judson Inspirational Series:  Judson University will welcome American gymnast and Olympic champion Mary Lou Retton as keynote speaker for their World Leaders Forum Inspirational Series October 10 at Herrick Chapel. Retton catapulted to international fame when she became the first American woman to win the all-around gold medal in women’s gymnastics at the 1984 Olympics. South Elgin drop-off recycling opens: Kane County’s second recycling drop-off spot recently opened at 735 Martin Drive in South Elgin. This was facilitated by the village of South Elgin's recent move from its old public works building on that site into a new building at 1000 Bowes Road. Recycling drop-off hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Nightmare on Chicago Street tickets now available: The Zombie Apocalypse is once again upon us and the only way for Elgin citizens to protect themselves is to head to the Safe Zone at Nightmare on Chicago Street. Elgin’s signature Halloween event returns to the streets of downtown Elgin October 22 from 6-11 p.m. Don’t miss out on your chance to escape the Zombie scourge. Tickets are only $12 in advance and available for sale at the Elgin Area Chamber (while supplies last) during normal business hours Monday-Friday.
