ELGIN'S FIVE FABULOUS FACTS FOR FEBRUARY 2017

Surgical Center Plans Green-Lighted: The state health board recently approved Advocate Sherman Hospital's plan to build a same-day ambulatory surgery center on its hospital campus. The proposed $12.7 million, 15,000 square foot project, which will provide outpatient services in general surgery, orthopedics, otolaryngology, ophthalmology and urology, is expected to begin construction in August with a projected open date of June 2018.

Elgin receives award for Brookside Basin retrofit: The City of Elgin recently received a Public Works Project of the Year Award in the category of "Environment - less than $5 million” from the American Public Works Association. The award recognized the efforts put forth in the recent Brookside Basin retrofit which saw the removal of concrete channels, and replacment of invasive plants with water-loving native plants.

Dinosaurs are returning to Gail Borden Library: The highly popular dinosaur exhibit "Giants" is returning to the Gail Borden Public Library. "Giant Dinosaurs are Back" will run from May to September 2017 and will see the return of the 33-foot tall full skeleton of Jobaria. The exhibit originally visited Elgin in 2006 to much acclaim. Gail Borden's summer reading program will also be tied to the exhibit as will the Dinos on Parade public art display.

GVF's Giving Tuesday impact: Twenty-eight area nonprofits raised a record $300,000 on Giving Tuesday in November of this past year, doubling the amount raised in 2015. Matching gifts and additional support from Grand Victoria Foundation brought the grand total to $448,000. The Elgin effort was part of the record shattering #ILGive 2016 #GivingTuesday campaign. As a result, more than 80 percent improved their fundraising results over last year, and 30 percent more than doubled their totals.

Going for Gold: Judson University student, Anali Cisneros of Elgin, has her sights set on matching the time of 2016 Olympic gold medalist race walker Liu Hong, with the hope of competing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. As of press date, Cisneros, a graduate of Elgin High School, was set to compete on January 29 at the USA Track and Field 50K Race Walk National Championship in Santee, California.
