ELGIN'S FIVE FABULOUS FACTS FOR AUGUST 2016

Thank You EFD Chief Fahy:
Elgin Fire Department Chief John Fahy announced his retirement from active duty effective October 10. Fahy's tenure spans 30 years, during which he saw the EFD achieve an ISO-2 rating that placed Elgin in the top 2% of fire departments in the nation. The Elgin Fire Department will celebrate 150 years of service to the community in 2016.

Elgin Community College Named National Exemplar:
Elgin Community College was named a National Exemplar in Career Preparedness by ACT at the National Gala on College and Career Readiness in June 2016. ECC was honored for its Alliance for College Readiness partnership that prepares high school students for college, offering open-door unemployment services to more than 100 individuals each month, and local financial literacy. ECC was previously named an Illinois Exemplar in February 2016.

U-46 Full-Day Kindergarten:
Full-Day Kindergarten (FDK) will be offered in all 40 U-46 elementary schools beginning in August. The District will implement a "play-based" approach to learning in FDK. Kindergartners will have access to materials and will learn academic content like reading and math through meaningful experiences. FDK will allow daily time for individual attention that will develop the whole child - academically, emotionally, physically and socially.

Go Pokemon Go!: The recent surge in popularity of the Pokemon Go augmented reality app has taken the world by storm and Elgin is no exception. On July 19, the Elgin Police Department hosted a walk-and-learn event to demonstrate to about 150 kids where the best places are to hunt for Pokemon in Elgin and how to do so safely. Later that week, local businesses organized a massive Pokemon Go lure drop which attracted about 500 people, as well as, local news crews to downtown Elgin.

New GBPL South Elgin Branch Opens:
The brand new South Elgin branch of the Gail Borden Public Library, located at 127 S. McLean Blvd., celebrated its grand opening on July 24. The festivities included a ribbon cutting, a performance by the Gail Borden Book Cart Drill Team and a visit from the Imperial Stormtroopers of the 501st Midwest Garrison. The new branch offers 4,275 sq. ft. of space, including a program room.
