PADS of Elgin is committed to providing safe shelter, support services, and compassionate advocacy to the men, women, and children of Northern Kane County and Hanover Township experiencing homelessness. Our goal is to break the cycle of homelessness by addressing the comprehensive needs of the local homeless population. PADS provides guests with a safe place to sleep, showers, laundry facilities, nutritious meals/snacks, and comprehensive case management to help guide them toward a path to self-sufficiency. Position Summary
The Receptionist is the first contact for PADS and will welcome people with a kind attitude. The Receptionist is also responsible for performing clerical tasks to support daily shelter operations. The duties include answering and transferring phone calls to staff, sorting, and delivering mail to employees/guests, accepting community donations, and greeting visitors when they arrive.
Reports To: Executive Director
Hours: 40 hours
Duties and Responsibilities
- Answering the phone, transferring calls
- Basic filing
- Referring calls to other service providers as needed.
- Completing Initial Screening form for potential guests.
Experience
At least 2 years of receptionist/administrative assistant experience.
General
- Be an advocate for PADS of Elgin.
- Assist around the shelter as needed.
- All other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Warm and welcoming attitude.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Bilingual-Spanish required.
- Empathetic listening skills.
- Able to use good judgment and identify needs and referral services.
- Ability to work with individuals who are experiencing homelessness.
- Basic computer skills.
- Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries while building rapport.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude, self-motivation, organization, and resourcefulness.
- Guest oriented and willing to assist where/when needed.
- Treat guests in a culturally sensitive manner.
- Demonstrate compassion, understanding and commitment to the organization’s mission, vision, and core values.
- Ability to establish and maintain professional boundaries in working with guests.
- Ability to work effectively in a constantly changing and sometimes demanding environment.
- Ability to work with a diverse population, with sensitivity to differences in culture, religion, sexual orientation, race, age, and physical and mental illness.
- Ability to negotiate different personalities and work under competing priorities.
- Ability to communicate well both orally and in written form and follow detailed instructions.

Schedule:
Monday-Friday 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM, slightly flexible.
Ability to commute/relocate:
Elgin, IL 60123: Reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (Required)
