Elgin Fire Department recognizes firefighters, citizens: In February, the Elgin Fire Department honored several Elgin citizens as well as EFD staff at the department’s awards ceremony at The Centre of Elgin. Among the civilian honorees included the father-son duo of Don and Michael Bush, Nathan Pagnoni, Angela Flintz, Andrew Robinson, Nohemi Farfan, Jasmine Becerra, Dawn Stoner, Joseph Kearns and Sean Markwood.
Boys & Girls Club honors Youth of the Year: Terrance Allen, a senior at Elgin High School, was named the Boys & Girls Club of Elgin’s Youth of the Year at a ceremony in February at The Haight honoring several area youths. He will compete later this year for the state title. Larsen Middle School student Briauna Brown earned the club’s 8th grade youth award.
City of Elgin to receive Wellness Award: The Illinois Parks and Recreation Association is recognizing the city of Elgin with the “Exceptional Workplace” award for 2015 for the steps that the city’s Wellness Committee has taken to provide city staff with a healthy workplace environment. The award evaluation examined benefits, wellness policies, wellness needs assessment, employee assistance programming, on-boarding, educational opportunities, environmental stewardship, and other measures.
Sherman Hospital named Baby-Friendly: In February, Advocate Sherman Hospital achieved Baby-Friendly designation from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, recognizing the highest level of support for breastfeeding mothers and babies. “This designation is a seal of approval from WHO and UNICEF for the high quality care and support we provide our families,” said Linda Deering, president of Advocate Sherman Hospital, one of only nine hospitals in Illinois certified as Baby-Friendly.
Colonial Cafe signature sundae celebrates milestone: 2016 is a landmark year for Colonial Cafe. In addition to celebrating its 115th anniversary in business, their signature dessert, the Kitchen Sink - Colonial’s classic take on the banana split, marks its 40th year on the Colonial Cafe menu in 2016 as well. Happy yummy anniversary!
