Mayor's Awards for Preservation: On May 2, the Elgin Heritage Commission and the Downtown Neighborhood Association honored nine outstanding contributors to Elgin’s heritage at the annual Mayor’s Awards Ceremony. Honorees included Christopher and Rebekah Berry, Glen and Susan Holland, Grant Born, Jacqueline Vossler and Richard Renner, Jennifer Fukala, Jim and Kelly Langenberg, Karen TerHorst and Perry Pollock, Ken Gough, and Linda Rock, who received the Mayor George Van De Voorde Outstanding Service Award.

Advocate Sherman Hospital Awarded Sustainability Honor Roll: Mayor Kaptain presented the Sustainability Honor Roll award to Advocate Sherman Hospital, at the Elgin Sustainability Commission meeting in April. Among the sustainable elements they have incorporated into their hospital include their 15-acre geothermal lake, the largest in Illinois, that heats and cools the hospital, saving over $1 million in energy costs per year.

GBPL Employee Named "Mover and Shaker": Monica Dombrowski, director of digital services at Gail Borden Public Library, was named one of 52 outstanding "Movers and Shakers" by the publication Library Journal. She developed "Gail's Toolkit," an online portal with ready-made materials to teach classes on a variety of technology topics. The Toolkit is utilized by users as far away as Europe.

New Name, Updated Facility: Corbella Clinic, a non-profit pregnancy medical clinic located in South Elgin formerly known as Fox Valley Pregnancy Center, was recently awarded a $5,000 grant from the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley. The grant helped the Clinic create an updated, contemporary atmosphere, that meets the needs of the young women and couples it serves of the millennial generation.

Club Guadalupano Awards $22,000 in Scholarships: Club Guadalupano of Elgin, which held its 40th annual Latino Awards Banquet on Saturday, April 22, at Villa Olivia Country Club in Bartlett, awarded twenty-two $1,000 scholarships to deserving U-46 and St. Edwards High School seniors who possessed a 4.0 GPA and were involved in extra curricular activities at school. At the ceremony the club also recognized Elisa Lara with the Joaquin Camacho Memorial Award for Community Service, and Richard DeMuth with the Les Lemke Memorial Award for Community Service.
