Job Description
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK  

Under direction, operates varied equipment engaged in the excavation of ditches for sewer and water systems, snow removal, street sweeping, maintenance of streets, rodding and jetting sewers and other related activities.

 

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
  • Assists in locating all underground utilities, water mains and sewers; operates the backhoe and tapping machine for the installation of new water service.
  • Locates broken water services and water mains; determines type of equipment needed for breakage of street; checks area for water services and sewer laterals.
  • Operates equipment to repair sewer breakage using rodding and jetting equipment.
  • Operates front and tractor loader, backfilling street openings and loading trucks.
  • Operates roller in repair and construction of bituminous streets and roads.
  • Operates various equipment in the installation and repair of fire hydrants, catch basins, manholes, etc.
  • Operates the self propelled street sweeper for removal of debris and litter accumulated along the City streets.
  • Operates dump trucks which haul material and/or plow snow, spreads snow and ice control material ; directs the loading of trucks with the collected dirt, material or snow.
  • Performs light maintenance tasks on equipment such as minor adjustments and repairs and preventive maintenance; i.e., replenishment of oil, fuel , water and grease.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

This is medium work requiring the exertion of 80 pounds of force occasionally, up to 40 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for reading and preparing written or computer reports, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, and operation of motor vehicles or equipment; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.  Regular attendance is an essential function of the position.


 

 

 OTHER:
  • Requires working knowledge of street, water and sewer construction methods, procedures and materials
  • Working knowledge of the safe and efficient operation of equipment and machinery including the manipulation of subsidiary controls while the vehicle is in operation
  • Skill in the operation of construction equipment used for water distribution systems, sewer lines and understand street/right-of-way maintenance and repair
  • Ability to understand work orders and to apply equipment to work problems; ability to perform minor mechanical repairs
  • Ability to perform arduous physical labor
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, fellow workers, and the general public
  • Demonstrative knowledge of the use and application of electronic mail systems
  • Must have a high school diploma or a GED and two years experience operating construction equipment

 

 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid Illinois Class A CDL drivers license with air brake endorsement within 6 months of hire date.
